Black Eyed Susies

Black-Eyed Susies explores the culture of rock climbing from the perspective of a woman. Climbing is a male dominated area, as are most sports. It can be intimidating for young girls and women to partake in something if it seems like a boys club. I conducted interviews with female climbers to learn about their personal experiences participating in this activity. I wanted to find women of various backgrounds to see how that affects their understanding of climbing. I also gathered content on the history of climbing, and notable women that pioneered the way for modern women in mountaineering. As an end result I created an engaging website that showcases women’s achievements in rock climbing. The goal of this is to provide role models to encourage more women and girls to get into rock climbing, feel empowered, and raise awareness on inequity in the sport.
